quick notes
Because you demanded it here's another blog post!! For anyone that knows Marvel comics monthly solicitations "because you demanded it" it the bullshit Marvels lets loose when they're talking about a new title nobody wanted! Since last time I saw Star Trek, painted the bathroom upstairs, saw star trek on Imax, did a lot of yard work, saw star trek and got an invite to something I'll let you know more about in a later post. The Suspense!!! I said that I saw Star Trek three times up there and that's because I really did see it three times. It was that good. What a great movie and an excellent bit of story telling to join the old Trek to the new Trek with the addition of Leonard Nimoy. I read an interview with the film makers and they said they were scared shitless after sending the script to Nimoy, because if he didn't want to do it they would have had to throw the whole thing away and start over again. If you've seen the movies you know why. If you haven't seen it then what the hell are you doing here reading this when you should be going out to see Star Trek. Zachary Quinto, awesome. Chris Pine, got the essence of Kirk down. Karl Urban, he's so good it's like he's possessed by the ghost of DeForest Kelley. Nimoy, It's Nimoy so you know it's good. Get working of the sequel, because I wanted to see it last week. After seeing Trek in Imax we went over to Burger King one night to set some food (of course) and to get one of those Star Trek glasses. If you've read my blog before you know my disappointment with Burger King when they were giving away the Spider-Man 3 toys and once again the bastards let me down. So, we head into the Bayers Lake location I order a Chicken sandwich and ask the guy behind the counter for one of the Star Trek glasses. His response, "oh that's over." WTF!! They'd only been out for a few days and I've seen the commercial on a daily basis ever since. If fact it was just on five minutes ago. Basically he was a LIAR! Jack ass!! So I went home without my Star Trek glass. One other let down this week was another kick in the teeth from the Weinsteins. Anyone who doesn't know the Weinsteins are film assholes who basically destroy everything they touch. They picked up the distribution rights for Fanboys about three years ago and have complete fucked it up ever since. I've been waiting to see this movie since August, 2007 when it was originally supposed to be released. After getting pushed back over and over and over it was given a shit limited release in theatres in February in about 30 theatres throughtout the states. That's not even in every state. It didn't hit theatres in Canada until April and even then it was only in Toronto and Montreal, etc. Of course it never got released in Halifax theatres so I'm still waiting to see it. After even more bullshit over the DVD release it was supposed to hit stores on Tuesday. I headed down to Jumbo Video to rent it, but of cours it wasn't there. Apparantly they had a different release date for the DVD in USA and in Canada. Since when did anyone start doing that?? Fanboys doesn't get released here until June 2. I won't believe it until I actually see it on the shelf. Current Mood: complacent | | Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 | | 10:36 pm |
it's alive!!!!!!!!!
After nearly two years the blog is back. I stumbled on this tonight by accident and decided I might as well throw in a new post. In the two years since my last post I've bought a house, moved, slept, eatern, watched some good movies and TV, watched a lot of shit, had my first flare up, changed medications, entered a hockey keeper league, wonthe first season of the keeper league, put on a successful Heel n Wheel and am in the midst of planning another. This weekend is M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ so everyone should head out to their nearest M&M's location and pick up a burger or hot dog. All the money raised goes to the CCFC so you're not only getting a good meal for $2.50 you're also helping out a good cause. Also on go this weekend is the new Star Trek film. I've been waiting to see this one since last Christmas, when it was originally supposed to be released. I was pretty skeptical about the "new" old crew, but after reading the comic book prequel Star Trek: Countdown and hearing about the great early reviews it sounds like it's going to really good. Maybe not as good as KHAN!!!!!!, but what the fuck is in the Star Trek universe. Anyone going this weekend I would recommend checking out the Countdown miniseries - I read the trade for free at Chapter's and downloaded the torrent online so you don't actually need to spend some cash to read it. The old and the new - big shoes to fill Counting down to fucking awesomeness If you're in Toronto I envy you on Thursday. Bruce Springsteen's playing the ACC on Thursday night in his only Canadian stop on the Workin' on a Dream Tour. Back in December Q104 and the online local forums started spreading all kinds of rumors that Bruce was coming here, but that turned out to be bullshit and really pissed me off. Thanks for starting you bullshit rumors and getting everyone's hopes up ya bastards. Next time just shut the fuck up. I've been on a big Springsteen kick lately, listening the the E Street Radio channel on Siruis Satellite radio. It's all Springsteen all the time and even plays some great concerts, many older than I am. I picked up Workin' On a Dream the day it came out and also picked up Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 - a live album he recorded thirty years ago. It has all thre great tracks from Born to Run and other old great like Roslita, For You and 4th of July Asbury Park. It also has one of the best live versions of Thunder Road I've ever heard as well. The last movie I saw was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. What a gay title that is, as if people are too stupid to figue out it's a prequel without the X-men Origins bullshit. If you haven't seen it in theatres yet, don't bother. It starts out all right, but just goes down hill, especially in the ludicrously stupid second half. It looks as though the writers gathered all the mutants not used in the three X-Men movies and threw them into this one, even is they didn't fit into the timeline at all. What the fuck is Cyclops doing in this by the way? And considering what year it is supposed to take place in shouldn't he be like 40 by the first X-Men movie? If you like Deadpool you're going to hate this movie, that's all I will say about the awfulness that is Deadpool. The fuck-up that made me laugh the hardest was Wolverine jacket. In Origins he's given a jacket by some old guy that is the same one he wears in the X-Men movie. I thought, hey not a bad tie in, until of course they completely fucked it up. Before the big fight scene at the end of the movie he takes off the jacket. He then proceeds to LOSE HIS MEMORY! If he doesn't remember the woman he loved how the fuck does he remember to go back and pick up his cool jacket. Nice work idiots! FAIL!!! If you have no preception of time or logic you'll love Wolverine!!!!! - That's enough for now need to go clean my eyes and brain after thinking about Wolverines bullshit again. Spider-Man 3 at Burger King!
I picked up our five Spider-Man 3 tickets at the theatre today. Thursday night at midnight whoo!!! While we were in Bayers Lake we stopped by the Burger King to see if they had a Spider-Man 3 promotion like they did for the second movie. They do!! They have the pull tabs on the fries and drinks and awesome new toys that are just like the Star Wars Episode III Toys they had a few years ago. This means they're much better than their semi-lame Spider-Man 2 toys. Scroll down to see a pic of the 10 new toys ...... When we got to BK I scoped out the toys display and noted how I wanted any one of them except for the Sandman in the Truck which looked kinda dumb. The bags for the toys are silver this time so you can't see in them before you open them. I got mine from the counter person and ripped it open once we got to the table. Of course I got the Sandman in the Truck - the one toy I wasn't too excited about. 1 in10 chance!!! The three kids sitting across from us got the much cooler Spider-man toys. You get him wet and his red suit turns black!!! How cool is that!!! I wanted to grab one from them, but Janet wouldn't let me. I'll have stop in and get another one the night of the movie . a blog-o-post I said I would update with a real blog post a few days ago and here it is finally.
a few things happened since my last blog post - turned 25 - bought Star Wars trilogy on DVD again - got married - went south on cruise - got some fish - computrt broke - computer fixed - computer broke - computer fixed - computer breaking again as we speak - got some books - got some comics - saw some movies - ate some food - did some othe stuff i forgot to mention too.
My computer is such a piece of shit. A month ago my screen started blacking out. After a very, very ,very long call to Dell tech support I fixed it. Then a few weeks later I started receiving Windows blue sceens of death constantly. I had my cimputer reset and it was fixed. For a week, before blue screens returned. After months of having my computer wait for the techs to fix it my hard drive was replaced and all was well. For about three days. Then my screen started blacking out again. Everytime I turn on my computer I just have to hope the screen works. Tonight I was playing some Mario on my NES emulator when I noticed a black spot in the right hand corner of the screen right next to the clock. Over the next half hour the black spot grew until the clock was almost completely gone. When I touched that part of the screen it was burning hot. The outercasing of the screen around that corner was also hot as fuck and when I pushed on it the plastic began to melt. I shut it off after that bullshit and am currently using the work spare laptop. Having to get my screen replaced now. YAY!! can't wait!
I seen a ton of movies since my last blog post - some good -s ome shit - here are the most memorable ones:
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - Hilarious movies - gotta love when he pisses on the corpse LOL

Scoop
I haven't seen alot of Woody Allen movies, but what I've seen has been good

Pan's Labyrinth - damn good movie even though I had to read it

Casino Royale - Bond is back and this time he isn;t a fucking loser like that shit Die Another Day

Borat - Very nice!!

Flag of our fathers - Clint Eastwood is the man - In front of the camera, behind the camera it doesn't matter it's all good. Either waydon't fuck with him or he'll blow you away with his awesomness.

Stranger Than Fiction - I really, really liked this movie. Will Ferrell is good as always, as is the man Dustin Hoffman. Is there anything he isn't good in?

TV:
I've tried to cut back my tv watching, but there's just so many good shows on these days. If you're not watching these you're missing out:
The Shield Season 6 - The Shield is back!!!!! In Canada we have to watch it online because we don't get FX, but it's better than waiting months for it to show up on DVD. If you've missed the first five seasons go check them out on DVD. Raw, real and intense as it gets on TV.

Heroes - Heroes finally returns on Monday!!!! About time! Will Peter kick Cyler's ass. Who'll stop the bomb thing? What's up with Claire;s dad now? Five episodes left and so much left to show. YAY!

Drive - I taped this on Sunday night, but haven't got around to watching it yet. From what I hear it's really good so that probably means Fox will cancel it in a month or so. If it's good on Fox you know it won't last. There are tons of examples if you don't believe me such as Arrested Development, Firefly, The Tick, Family Guy (before they brought it back), Futurama, Undeclared, Greg the Bunny, Andy Richter Controls the World. I rest my case.

Comics!!!
In case you missed it Captain America is dead. I wish I had missed Yahoo! spoiling it for me before i got to read the issue. Stupid Yahoo front page did the same thing to me when Spider-Man unmasked!

Buffy - Season 8
Joss Whedon is back and he's brought his best creation to comics. Joss is currently writing Buffy season 8 for Darkhorse comics. Issue two came out earlier thus month and so far it' pretty good. The month long wait between issue is alot worse than the old one week wait between episodes, but it beats when they used to take a month or two off between episodes. You could always tell when a big cliffhanger was coming because they were about to go on a long break. If you haven't seen all 7 seasons of Buffy check those out on DVD before getting the season 8 comic or you'll be pretty lost.

Spider-Man - Reign
If you liked Batman: The Dark Knight Returns you should check out Spider-Man Reign. Pick up both if you;ve never heard of eitehr of them. DKR was written by Frank Miller back in the 80s before he started putting out shit. Reign is damn good. Dark, but good.

Y The Last Man Vol. 8
Y The Last Man TPB number 8 came out a number of months ago. The story of Yorrick Brown continues and it stil rules. It almost over and No. 9 comes out in May. There going to make this into a movie one day, but I don't think the whole series would translate into a two hour movie.

Baseball is back!!!
Jays World Series 2007!!! If we can stop getting injured anyway. Way to go Reed johnson (back), Troy Glaus (heel) and B.J. Ryan (elbow). Hurry up and get healthy and get in there. I have four fantasy baseball teams right now and so far my performance is meh. One is in 3rd, one's in 5th, one in 6th and one in 9th. As long as at least comes in first I'll be happy.

Here are my preseason baseball predicitons:
AL East - Boston Central - Detroit West - Los Angeles Angeles Wild Card - Cleveland MVP - Travis Hafner CY - Johan Santana ROTY - Alex Gordon
NL East - Philadelphia Central - Milwaukee West - Los Angeles Dodgers Wild Card - NY Mets MVP - Carlos Beltran CY - Jake Peavy ROTY - Tim Lincecum
World Series
Los Angeles Angels vs. NY Mets
Angels win World Series
Here's my move quiz answers by the way
1. Empire Strikes Back 2. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 3. L.A. Confidential 4. The Untouchables 5. Free Enterprise 6. Raiders of the Lost Ark 7. Dirty Harry 8. Saving Private Ryan 9. Stranger Than Fiction 10. Unbreakable
That should do it for now ....

Hi everybody! After a long break Dave has returned. A lot has happened since my last blog post, but I think I'll start with my trip to Las Vegas. For any of you who didn't already known myself, five of my co-workers and my alter ego Poker Dave hit Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker in July. I arrived in Vegas on july 22 and headed back home on July 25. It was a short trip, but still lots of fun. The main purpose of my trip was to play in a $1,000 No Limit Hold'em rebuys tournament at the World Series of Poker. I played awful, my cards were total crap during the short time I lasted in the tourney. If you're going to play in a major poker tourney make sure it isn't a rebuy tournament unless you have lots of money to rebuy back in. Let me put it this way Canadian Poker Pro Daniel Negreanu bought back in 48 times. That $48,000 by the way. For more info on my WSOP poker adventure check out my poker blog at - http://www.ats411.com/pokeraff/story.aspx?StoryId=10880It's hard to explain Vegas to someone who hasn't been there. First of all it's damn hot. While I was there the average temperature was 44 degrees. Everywhere you go is air conditioned so it's pretty much like exiting a freezer and entering a sauna when you go outside. It's a dry heat though and you really only spend 5 minutes at a time outside going from hotel to a cab or hotel to another hotel/casino so it wasn't too bad. WE stayed at the Wynn Las Vegas. What a place! Expensive doesn't go far enough in explaining the Wynn. Here's pic of the place from the outside. The Wynn is a hotel, a casino, a shopping mall and more all rolled into one. REally though all major hotel/casinos are like this. I didn't do any shopping though because I couldn't afford anything in stores like Rolex, Channell and some European designers I've never heard of that wanted big money for clothes. Vegas just oozes money. Everything you look at on the strip looks like it cost millions of dollars. The lights, the arcitecture, the people, it's just crazy! I was able to a hold of some of that money thanks to some college students who were putting on a gaming study and paying people for it. I made a cool $140 for an hour of click a mouse a few hundred times. Kinda like what I'm paid for during my regular work day! More info on the whole thing can be found on my poker blog - link above again The free $140 gave me seomthing to gamble with and we all hit the blackjack tables that night. The Wynn isn't the Casino Nova SCotia and the cheapest Black Jack table you're going to find is $15/ hand. I sat down with $100 in chips and a few hours later walked away with $260. Then the craps tables were calling. In case you didn't already know Casino Nova Scotia got rid of their craps table so I haven't rolled the bones in a long time. I was up and down for an hour and a half before hitting that unlucky seven too many times which cost me my $30. Oh yeah the minimum bet on the pass line at the Wynn is $15. That's a little more than the $1 bets we used to make at Casino NS. I got Greg, on of the Chalk boys hooked on craps p and we put another $40 into a table the next night at a cheap $10 craps table at another casino. I was up to almost $120 at a point before the dice started hitting the sevens again. The stick man at that casino, his name was Tannet, was a riot and made the game, win or lose a blast. The free drinks, which are available at all casinos if you're playing, made it pretty fun too. That's probably enough on Vegas for now. There probably a few more stories in my poker blog - again link above I hit a book store in Vegas and picked up a cheap graphic novel, which is my pick of the month. It's called Marvel - written by Kurt Busiek and drawn/painted by Alex Ross. It tells the story of numerous important stories in Marvel comics history through the eye of a newspaper photographer. The story and art are both amazing and I highly recommend it. For all you Buffy and Angel fans you may want to visit your local comic book store in September. Starting that month Buffy season 8 is coming out in comic book form. Even better the man joss Whedon os writing it. Most of the Angel comics that have been put out recently have been disapointing, but with Whedon's name officially attached to this it should kick ass!! On the comic shelves right now is one of the best Marvel events in years, maybe even decades, Civil WAr. Issure three just came out a few weeks ago and the final page was killer with the return of *****SPOILERS******* don't read if you don;t want to know *** *** *** *** Thor!! He was killed about a year ago by the way. His hammer returned a few months ago, but this is the first real Thor sighting since his death. Guess you can't keep a Norse God down. SPOILERS END HERE: If you're looking for some great music pick up the new Johnny Cash CD - American V - A Hundred Highways - The Man in Black may be gone, but he's still putting out better CD's than most of the shitty artists who are still alive. It's getting late so I think I'm done for now - I think this time I'll update before a month goes by. We'll see how it goes | | Sunday, June 25th, 2006 | | 10:05 pm |
I have returned
Another month has passed, maybe more actually, so it's once again time for another Dave Blog! It's is Sunday, June 25 and I'm sitting on my couch after a long day of Heeling and Wheeling, chinese-fooding-it-up and some work-related writing to top it all off. For all of you who don't know the Heel 'N' Wheel-A-Thon is a major fund raiser for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Thanks to people at my work, my family and Janet I was able to raise $541 for the cause. In total the fundraiser brought in an estimated $38,000. Considering their goal was $35,000 and it was raining like hell on and off all day long that's a great result. Here's hoping that money and the rest raised at events across Canada can go to finding a cure for IBD. What else has been going on since my last update? I received my Las Vegas flight plan not too long ago. I'll be departing Halifax on July 22nd, but make a few stops before Vegas. First I land in Toronto, before jetting off to Denver. I'll only be in Denver for about an hour before flying to vegas. The combined flight time that day is just under eight hours, but because of the time zone difference I leave Halifax at 6:00 AM and arrive in Vegas at 1209 pm. The flight back is one really long day. I depart Vegas at 11:10 and four hours and 45 minutes later will arrive in Montreal. After a hour long wait in Montreal it's back to Halifax where I'm scheduled to arrive at 11:15 pm. A whole day of Airplanes and airports. In between the flights I'll be trying to cash in at the World Series of Poker. For my Poker DAve blog I'm getting a work paid buy-in to a $1000, unlimited rebuys tourney. 963 players played in this tourney last year with the year getting just over $600,000. I'll be happy with any kind of money finish. I think this happened before my last blog post, but I didn't include it, so I'm throwing it in now. My employers recently changed their name from SportDatabases to Chalk Gaming. In case anyone wonders why Chalk, it's a sports betting term for favorite. For more info on chalk and the wide variety of thing we do check us out at chalkgaming.com - How many people are reading Marvel's latest epic crossover Civil War? I'm guessing that as to my knowledge of the people who read this - not many. Even though that may be the case most of you probably know the big reveal at the end of the second issue. Why? Because of the stupid New York Time and stupid Yahoo!!! and a million other media outlets giving it away. Even comic fans were spoiled by those idiots at the New York Time who published a story that told everyone about the big secret the day the book was released. The paper arrives at what 7 am. Whereas nobody could have read that book until at least 10am. At least that's when my local comic store opens. Good one New York Times assholeos. Thankfully I don't get the NY times, but I do frequently check out Yahoo!!! And guess what Yahoo decided to plaster on their front page in big letters. Something like this - Spider-Man Unmasked!! - Way to go you jerks! I haven;t read the book and you told me the ending. THanks a bunch!! Depsite the stupid press reveal Civl War kicks ass so pick it up! Superman Returns opens on Wednesday, although unless you've stopped watching TV or haven't stepped foot in a supermarket or department store you probably already knew that. I'll admit Superman isn't my favorite character, he's not even my favorite DC character, but the first two Superman movies were good and Bryan Singer's directing so that should make for a good flick. If Superman is half as good as this then it'll be good enough. If it maskes any money at all it will be good enough for a sequel in the studio's view. Stupid hollywood. For more on stupid hollywood read this: Fortune and Glory - by Brian Michael Bendis Seems like a good jumping off point - see you next time, or next month as it may be | | Monday, May 29th, 2006 | | 11:51 pm |

Another month has gone by so it's time for me to do another livejournal update. Whoo!!! I went to see X-Men 3 yesterday and it was good, but I think it really missed the mark if this is supposed to be the last X-Men film. The story which is a mix of the well-known over-exposed Phoenix saga and "the mutant cure" was too much for an hour and 44 minute movie. I find it strange that more stuff really happens in this film than in the second movie, but it is 30 minutes shorter? Huh? This would have been better as two seperate movies - one about the Phoenix saga and one about the mutant cure. It was entertaining in the comic book action movie ways I expected, but the character development, and small story elements that comic book geeks like me look for were missing. If you liked the first two though you should like X-3. If you're a big X-men comic fan you may be disappointed though. I have my small bowel x-ray early next week and should find out how well my medication in working soon after. The procedure is pretty basic. I have to drink some barium, which is a chalky liquid, and wait for it to pass through my system into my small bowel. Then they snap a few pics of it and we see how how well my inflamtion has subsided. I found out last week that one of my favorite comic writers also has Crohn's disease. Apparently MArk Millar announced publically back in April that the reason he took so much time off in the past year was because of a tough battle with Crohn's. There's a really good interview here : http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/millar/millar_1.html - that talk's about Millar's long road to a diagnosis and some interesting comic talk. Millar is currently writing MArvel's latest big event Civil War. The first issue which came out earlier this month was a good start to what should be a great mini-series. If you want to check out some great MArk Millar stuff pick up this stuff: The Ultimates Marvel Knights Spider-Man Superman: Red Son Wanted Chosen Sticking with comics for a second, the latest trade of one of the best series out there right now hit the shelves last week. Brian K. Vaughan's Y: The Last Man is one of the most gripping books I've ever read. Everytime you think Vaughan has come up with the best cliffhanger you thought possible he one ups it in the next issue. The seventh trade entitled Paper Dolls came out last week - but you have to start with the first TBP - Unmanned. I guaranteed you'll be hooked and want to go pick up book two right after finishing the first one. Here's the pics of the latest book, Paper Dolls, and book 1 - Unmanned. Unmanned Paper Dolls Rewinding for a second. After I found out that Mark Millar had Crohn's I decided to Google the disease and see if any other famous people had it. Here's a list brief list of famous/semi famous people that have Crohn's. Theoren Fleury (former NHL star) Dwight Eisenhower (that former president guy) Shannen Doherty (famous TV bitch) Mike McCready (Pearl Jam guitarist) JFK (had colitis - he was a president too!) That's all was able to find so far. There's list of other semi-famous people all over the net, but I didn't know any of them so I chose not to include them. Look what I got last week !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is Darth Vader in potato form. NIce!!! Other vegetables beware! Dave's Picks: I guess I kind of started the picks early - i.e. see the comics section of the blog. T.V. - Robot Chicken. - I stumbled upon this hilarious show online when a site posted a clip of Darth Vader phoning the Emperor. The show is just a bunch of short comedy skits and sketches made out of old action figures and clay mation. For anyone that grew up in the 80's it is hilarious with great skits ripping off Star Wars, Transformers, Ninja Turtles, Captain Planet, and so much more. Go to youtube.com and search for Robot Chicken and laugh your ass off. One of my fav's is Ode to the Nut Shot. Funny!! The show is on the Cartoon Network in the states, but season one is out on DVD, which I currently have on hold at the library. Not sure if it's on any channel in Canada. Have to settle for internet clips for now. Movies- see X-men 3 rant - Other than that I haven't seen any new movies in quite awhile. I currently have a German war movie called Downfall home from the library, but haven't got chance to see it yet. It is about the last days of Hitler and the third reich and is supposed to be really good. Anyone else seen it?? Comics - See MArk Millar list - Y THE LAST MAN!!!!! - Books without pictures - If you like poker at all check out Big Deal by Anthony Holden. It chronicles a year in Holden's life in which he player poker professionally. The book was written more than a decade ago so it's alot different that the poker world of today, but Holden, who is a British writer that has written about the Royal Family and other is a music critic for a major English publication keeps it interseting. I think that's enough for now. Maybe I'll get my next post up in less than a month next time. We'll see I guess. Send me comments about anything and everything!!!!! | | Tuesday, April 25th, 2006 | | 10:19 pm |
OMG Dave's Back
Hey everyone, I decided it was time to post another live journal update. Less then a month between posts this time. YAY! My latest health update is a good one. After being sick for three weeks and spending a couple days in the hospital I'm finally pain free and back to eating real food. Food is good! For anyone who doesn't already know I have Crohns Disease. After a non-existent bladder infection, never really there appendicitis the docs finally figured out why I had excruiating stabbing pain after eating for almost two weeks. All it took was me to have a high fever, uncontrollable shakes and a vomiting spell to finally get to the right answers. On a funny side note, my back-up first baseman in my fantasy baseball team - Todd Helton - was just diagnosed with Crohns today. He had the same symptoms as I did for the last week (severe abdominal pain and high fever) and I thought he had Crohn's disease a few days ago. Who's the smart doctor now! Crohns can be controlled by medication so I sohuld go on mliving normally hopefully for quite a long time. Flare ups are possilbe every now and then which I guess would be pain and other bowel problems, but I'm not too worried about that. I'm on four medications right now but over the next few weeks that will drop to two and eventually only one. On Monday I took 22 pills!!!!! Stepping away from my medical adventure my DVD picks of the week - or I guess month as they're turning out to be is Free Enterprise. If you know anything about Star Trek or Star Wars or anything Sci-Fi you should find at least something in this small budget movie funny. They released it new special edition DVD of it last month and I just picked it up today. William Shatner's in it so it can;t be that bad right? Erick McCormack is in it too, and this is before he became famous for that crap Will and Grace My comic picks are too many to name this week, but I'll do my best. Brian Michael Bendis may have left Daredevil recently, but it may be even better with Ed Brubaker writing it. Daredevil is one of the biggest underrated MArvel characters and I highly reccommend the entire Bendis run and the amazing run Brubaker has started in the last two months. One other comic recommedation is Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. If you want to know more about comics or want a new look into story telling check out this book. Comics are a lot more than simply putting words with pictures and this book shows you why and how. If there were a university course on comics this would be one of the text books. Movie trailer of the week - I was looking around youtube.com a few days ago and stumbled across a trailer for a small independent movie that I think looks really cool. It's called 5-25-77. That's the day Star Wars was originally released, but that's only a small part of the film. The film has a website - www.5-25-77.com - but I would go looking for the trailer at youtube.com. If you haven't been on youtube.com before take a fun look around there too. There's some great amazing and funny videos on there and it's updated constantly. Music - gotta go with Bruce Springsteen Devils and Dust. I finally got it from Columbia House the day before I went into the hospital and I've been listening to it everyday since. It is that good. I found the line - I got God on my side I'm just trying to survive What if what you do to survive Kills the things you love Fear's a powerful thing poignant when I first found out about the Crohn disease. You can take that however you want. Bruce has another album coming out this month and even though it's a differnt departure from Devils and Dust it looks like it should still be just as good. If he ever plays a show anywhere around here I'm going for sure. That's it for now - Thanks to everyone for the well wishes while I was sick. If you want to chip in and help in the fight against Crohns Disease head down to the nearest M&M Meat Shops location on Saturday May 13 for the Charity Day BBQ. All the proceeds goes to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of Canada. They also take donations most of the time I think if you can't get in that day. Thanks for the help. Invalid video URL. Dave' Back ... Holy Shit!!!!
Dave has finally awoken from a long sleep and has returned to update my blog. Whoo!!!!!!! Dave hasn't been feeling well recently thanks to very painful stomache that was at first called one thing and now appears to be another. At least I'm finally feeling well enough to eat all the foods I've been missing for the last four or five days. Food is good. Since my last post lots of happened, but most of it's not worth mentioning. I'm enrolled in a poker tournament this Saturday at the Casino where PokerDave plans on cleaning up. My work's paying for it so I can write about it in my PokerDave blog so it's win-win either way for me. Speaking of the casino, they got rid of craps. What's up with that? HOw can you can have a casino without craps? I'm thinking about writing an angry e-mail or letter as soon as I can find somewhere to send it. Strange Adventures had a nice sale last weekend with 25% off everything so I stopped in to pick up my weekly issues and got a nice discount on the new Alias Omnibus. The complete Alias comic series (it has nothing to do with the show) in one handy and very heavy hardcover. There's a pic below. It's by Brian Michael Bendis and the library has a few of them in softcover. I highly reccomend it to everyone. Also on my reading list lately was the latest Harry Potter book. I finished it last week and wasn't as shocked by the ending after the surprise death was revealed to be a day after I started reading the book. Not bad though. Very eager to see how the tie up all the ,losse ends in the seventh and final book. Baseball is Back!!!!!! Oh yeah!!!! The Blue Jays played pretty well on opening night and if they can keep pitching as well as they did versus the Twins we could be in for a good year. I still think the bastard Yankees will take the East, but the World Series won't be going through New York again this season. My World Series pick is the Los Angeles Angels. Place your bets. I've been hooked on Johnny Cash music lately. I picked upa few CDs for cheap at Wal Mart and got three more from the library. I recommend the following and anything else you can get your hands on with the name Johnny Cash on it. Dave's other picks of the week: Movies - V for Vendetta - I haven't seen many movies recently, but out of the few I have seen this was the best. See the movie then read the book. By the way the book is better and different. TV - The Shield - Season 1-5 - I finished watching season five of The Shield recently and recommend it on DVD to anyone. It's a lethal raw and graphic at times, but it's also a very real, well acted, story driven show with great characters. If you like NYPD Blue or any other cop show you should check it out. Comic - I already recommended Alias, but another good book on my list recently is Fables. Currently there are six trades paperbacks out that has the monthly series in it. Check out book 1 and if you like it at all I recommend the rest. They get better and better as the story progresses. Music - Johnny Cash - anything - Bruce Springteen Devils and Dust - Bruce's latest CD is really good. I saw him perform some of the new somgs and some old ones on Muchmoremusic awhile back and that's avialable on DVD now. I don't remember what it's called, but it's really good and well worht seeing if you like the Boss. That's it for me for now. I'll try and update more frequently from now on. Dave returns
After ignoring my Live Journal for awhile I'm back. Yay me! What have I done since my last post? Work, sleep, eat, watch the TV, read the books. Went out for drinks and music with Justin on Saturday night. It was really a good time until the band started playing and all the oldies started dancing. It was too creepy so we had to leave. There was one old guy who was like the bands roadie or something and was talking to the band when he wasn't approaching woman and grabbing them and hauling them off to the dance floor. The WBC starts in two days!!! For all of you unenlightened people out there the WBC is the World Baseball Classic, which is much like the Soccer World Cup only they play baseball. Canada has a team in it, but we have no real chance of winning. My pick is Venezuela. (sp.??) With their dominant starting pitching and the couple of mashers they have in their line up they should take the title. Dave's picks of the week: TV - Arrested Development season 1 and 2 on DVD - Start from season one and watch them straight through and laugh your ass off. Best show that nobody watched. Stupid people not watching and getting good shows canceled Movie - Dave hasn't seen many movies lately, but you can't go wrong with Serenity. See FireFly first though. It makes it better Book - I'm reading Locked Doors by Blake Crouch right now and highly recommend it. It's a sequel to his first book Desert Places, which I picked up for $2 at the Herald Book sale a few years ago. Both a kinda sick and scary, but still hard to put down. comics - If you haven't read Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan you should be. They have the first five books at the library in Halifax so go get them. Go Now! Web site - Chucknorrisfacts.com - Everything you've ever wanted to know about chucknorris - some of my favorite include - - Chuck Norris doesn't read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants - There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of animals Chuck Norris allows to live. - The leading causes of death in the United States are: 1. Heart Disease 2. Chuck Norris 3. Cancer - When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris. - Chuck Norris is the reason why Waldo is hiding. Almost as funny as Conan O'Brian' Walker Texas Ranger Lever Current Mood: complacentCurrent Music: City of Lakes - Matt Mays | | Monday, February 20th, 2006 | | 9:55 pm |
1st post
After putting it off for awhile I've finally got my Live Journal up and running. Today was longer than most days. Up at 3:30 am to drive Janet to work. We only saw four cars on the drive into Halifax and three more on the drive home. I always wonder where the hell are all those people going? They're probably all out committing crimes, except for that one guy delivering papers. There was also some crazy lady walking her dog across the Hammonds Plains Road overpass at 4:00 am. Sounds like a lot of fun. At least I got to sleep more when I got back home. Sleep is good. I got my new contract and papers signed at work,so I'm all making more money with my pay raise. Yay! I was later getting to work than usual after sleeping in due to my 3:30 journey into Halifax. I did my usual weekly column for TheRX.com and finally got caught up on the Poker Dave poker blog after falling behind lately. Check out my other blog under my Poker Dave persona at http://www.ats411.com/pokeraff/starting-out.aspx - All the poker hands are real, but some of the situations are made up. TRy and guess which ones are and which aren't. To prep for the blog I also got in an hour of Omaha Hi/Lo play in at work. I had to play in the play money area because I don't trust my Omaha skills enough to rick my work money poker account. It turns out I'm either better at Omaha than I thought or I'm really lucky because I wound up doubling my money during my run that included winning four hands in a row at one point and winning a huge pot with a straight flush to the king. After I'm done here we're going to watch Angel Season 1 DVD. If you haven't seen it you have to or you suck. Watch all of the Buffy seasons too. Dave has spoken!! More good tv and movie picks to come. That's enough for now. I don't know how often I'll update this, but check back everynow and then anyway.
